The live tracker above answers when two sessions overlap. Here we map why those windows matter — a liquidity curve across the full 24-hour cycle, then what actually makes each of the three pairings trade differently.

London and New York together account for the largest share of daily turnover. When both desks quote EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CHF and USD/CAD at once, spreads tighten to their tightest levels of the day. The first two hours — 13:00 to 15:00 UTC — are usually the single busiest stretch, and US economic releases tend to land right in the middle of it, producing sharp, tradable directional moves.
The briefest overlap — often a single hour — but it matters for yen crosses — EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY and CHF/JPY — because it hands Asian liquidity straight into Europe's open. When London moves to BST the window doubles, and the extra hour falls in late Tokyo afternoon, when Japanese institutional flow is at its strongest.
Sydney is the first major desk to open, so this overlap is where the trading week begins. It is the cleanest window for AUD and NZD pairs (AUD/JPY, NZD/JPY, AUD/USD), and because the two cities sit mostly in step across the year, the overlap runs for seven hours on AEST and six on AEDT — under AEDT it simply shifts an hour earlier, landing squarely in Tokyo's morning.
